Fiat make several different cars, if you consider the Ferrari, they are officially a Fiat brand and still being sold. Alfa is also owned by Fiat, they pulled
out in 1995-96 (but returning in 2010 or 11) .
Fiat pulled the plug in 1983 due to EPA and safety regs getting harder, oddly enough Fiats were the only cars that didn't need an air pump in their fuel injected cars as their emissions were far lower than the standards in the early 80's. Lancia, another Fiat brand, pulled out in 1982. The Fiat 124 (called the Spyder 2000 in the later years) was imported as the Pininfarina along with the X-19 (Under the name Bertone) until 1986 and some 1987 X-19's until the importer went bankrupt. I worked on these cars, but my name isn't Tony. They were fun to drive and for a 4 cylinder car made more power than anything at that time sans a Lotus. My Lancia made 150hp with bolt on mods and that was pretty good back in the 80's. It would waste a BMW 325 and do 140 and stick to the ground like glue. The Yugo was a car built in the former Yugoslavia but was actually a Fiat tooled vehicle. Fiat retained 50 percent of the European market share for many years and although they have a rather bad reputation here, they are more noted for their aluminum engine plants and manufacturing and robotics used in many other companies plants. Fords original Modular 4.6 was made in Fiats Teksid plant and are considered the strongest blocks made for modular applications and are highly sought after. Check out the Lancia Thema 832, it was a four door sedan with a Ferrari motor in it, pretty neat car and although de-tuned, it was pretty f'in fast. It was also the first car with an adjustable rear spoiler. The Lancia Beta series in Europe had headlights which tilted up and down to follow the road and also had the sway bars terminate into the brake calipers to adjust the caliper pressure so the car always stopped without nose diving. I hope this helps lol.. |

What does this mean for anyone leasing a Chrysler?

Fiat imported cars to the US in the 70s and they turned into rust in a very short period of time. Chrysler made those Dodges and Plymouths Reliants(?) and
stuff that rusted almost as fast. With the merger of Chrysler, Fiat and the Obama administration, , you will be able to to to the nearest GMC (Government
Motor Company) dealership (the Post Office would be nice) and get your new OBAMAMOBILE. A great family car with good mileage and recyclable.

Noting. The Government now backs the warranty. A total of 12 Billion Dollars of Tax payer money. The United Auto Workers, Fiat and the Federal Government will all share ownership of Chrysler when the bankruptcy is completed. How the United States Government became part owner of an Auto Builder is beyond me. Oh wait now I remember. As I posted I was against the Auto Bailout under Bush. I was against the Auto bailout under Obama. Yet for some crazy reason I can not understand, under Obama and his bailout the American Government is now part owner of an Auto Company. Since my taxes helped the bailout, do I now own a piece of "USCHRIAT"? I'm trying to think of previous nations where the Government owned the auto industry? Hmmm I just cant put my finger on it. |

My father bought a Fiat back in the 70's to commute to the 113 from Suffolk. The car was a nightmare. It rusted so bad that it was recalled and Fiat bought
it back from him. In all honesty Hondas of the same period had a similar problem. The original Civics were real rustbuckets. The difference was that Fiat gave
up and never recovered.
Socialism works fine until you run out of "other guy's" money.

Just a funny thing. My Dad still has two fiats from the early seventies, he purchases brand new when I think he was about 20 or 21 years of age.
One is a piece of crap fiat 850 I belive, and the other is a real classic. A Fiat Spider. He still drives the spider on occassion. Great old school sports
car.
Stay safe. |
