Air France CEO Pierre-Henri Gourgeon told the families in a private meeting that the plane broke apart either in the air or when it slammed into the ocean, according to Guillaume Denoix de Saint-Marc, who was asked by Paris prosecutors to help counsel family members and was at the Wednesday meeting. The plane, carrying 228 people, disappeared after leaving Rio de Janeiro for Paris on Sunday night. Investigators were relying heavily on the plane's automated messages to help reconstruct what happened to the jet as it flew through towering thunderstorms. They detail a series of failures that end with its systems shutting down, suggesting the plane broke apart in the sky, according to an aviation industry official with knowledge of the investigation. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the crash. They must have flew into an intense funnel cloud.

If AF447 did experience a rapid loss of cabin pressure as has been reported, the people on board would have been unconscious within 30 seconds, so they would never have felt the impact. The moments of terror beforehand, however, are unimaginable. May their souls rest in eternal peace. Most likely the cost per plane weighed against the liability from a couple of hundred deaths. Congress should mandate that any passenger liner that flies into/ove US territory be so equipped.

Not necessarily. While explosive decompression will probably result in hypoxia and hypothermia at that altitude, and would probably result in loss of consciousness for most - if not all - of the passengers and crew, those conditions would not necessarily last until impact. It is quite possible that, once descending through 10,000 feet, some would have regained consciousness in the now oxygen-enhanced atmosphere. The crash investigation of Pan Am 103 (Lockerbie, Scotland) revealed the above, and one of that aircraft's flight attendants was actually found conscious by a farmer's wife before succumbing to her injuries. That's an extremely volatile weather zone, especially this time of year. Microbursts can not only push an aircraft down, they can also push them up, causing huge stress on the airframe. May they rest in peace.

That is not even taking into consideration any possible high order detonation of an explosive device... I would think the last thing any accident investigator wants would be negative buoyancy flight data recorders, popping up from 2-3 miles down in the ocean, then floating in the currents of an open ocean for two or three days, before any rescue vessels could arrive and look to find them... The proper place for them is to stay where they are permanently affixed to the rear sections of the aircraft, until recovered by experts... Besides any mechanism that could be triggered for their release, could be subject to early release impact, by force of impact or by mechanical failure and thereby lose valuable information during impact, or free fall stages... The great difficulty now will be finding them in the mountainsides that comprise the underwater surface of the wreckage area, depths vary from 10,000 22,000 feet plus, very rugged underwater recovery area, and less then thirty days to get it done before the pinging of the boxes ends... I'm curios to read what they have determined as evidence in the separation of the aircraft, possibly that 23 foot section recovered on day one...has some indicators of failure..

Even though I'm aware driving is more dangerous than flying, I'm comforted by the fact I have some means of defense/ control, in an unnatural disaster, like terrorist/perp attack.

Posts: 151 06/04/09 20:05:50	Tracking floating data recorders that emit a signal would be child's play for any seasoned navigator. Original "black boxes" sometimes did not survive a crash. Today they have been re-enginered to survive. Can't tell me that this is an unworkable problem.

I am not a conspriacy theorist but you can not tell me that Flight 800 was a mechanical failure. I always found it amazing that 95% of the aircraft was recovered but not any piece of the wings where the engines and fuel tanks were.

The gear come up and the pilot accelerates and climbs. Flight attendant comes on and says, "The captain was told not to land and to circle for a while." We make a big left turn over Rego Park and come in on 31. As we get to the gate, the captain tells us that the winds had changed and we would have exceeded the tailwind restrictions, so they had to put us on a different runway. Mrs. Z is flying out of EWR this afternoon. Her flight is delayed, but she's hoping to get on an earlier flight, standby.
