Amazed calling her m'aam was not out of title. It was a sign of respect, just as sir is a sign of respect. It is a completely acceptable form of address.
PS Chief Laforgia was another prima donna who insisted on chief instead of m'aam. |

Suppose it were 3 years ago or more, you were still active, in full NYPD uniform, and you were giving a deposition, or respectfully answering questions, addressing a crowd, or just addressing a person by ma'am or sir, and that same person you were addressing, in full view of the public and because of the mere fact that you respectfully called them sir or ma'am) was so irritated by this that they abruptly interrupted you and told you to refer to them as councilman/woman/person, or State Senator etc. (again, you pick the title)..... How would you react? In uniform? Would you feel his/her actions were appropriate? I didn't get all the above from your question, but I've been there before.. I was told by a judge once who I was answering with the word "sir" when he asked me questions who told me in a unpleasant tone to call him "your honor".. While I wasn't thrilled with his tone it didn't bother me that much.. As I though about it I said to myself he was right.. I was also once told by a female captain to stop answering her with the word mam and to call her captain.. I got the impression she thought I was being disrespectful (which I wasn't) and on reflection she was right.. I should have addressed her as captain or sir.. Some of you who I'm sure because you just don't like Boxer jumped on her.. I don't care what her reasons for doing this were, the point is she is right.. PHONY SELECTIVE RIGHT WING OUTRAGE!!!!

Maybe she's working for the wrong institution if being addressed as "ma'am" bothers her so much. Is it her prerogative being of a higher rank to tell you to address her using her rank instead of "ma'am"? Of course, however, you were NOT wrong for addressing her as "ma'am." This is the standard form of courtesy that our academy teaching us to utilize, thus to my knowledge you would be completely out-of-protocol in addressing her as "sir." If she can't handle being addressed using the standard protocols instilled in every cop by the police academy then maybe she can't handle the rank either... |

To do this story justice one should listen to the tape. The disdain and contempt for this career military man are very evident. This was all about the sen putting the general in what she felt was his proper place.I wonder how hard she worked that seat and in what capacity. Actually brought to mind more than a few encounters with some Brass on this job,it always seemed the less competent the more arrogant and egotistical they were. If this had been a Male Senator and the General had referred to him as "Sir would there have been an issue. I watched the video and it was obvious that
she was grandstanding the fact that she had no respect for the Military and she used the opportunity to show it. Wouldn't it sound more discrete if she had
said.You can refer to me as Senator with a smile. She chose to chastise a high ranking military official which shows she is like the rest of Berkley/San
Francisco Liberals who don't appreciate the fact that these men and women who keep us safe . Respect is a two way street!

First, Boxer's dressing-down of the General in the middle of testimony on such a trivial issue just illuminates how small-minded and elitist she is. It
reminds me of some of those community charlatans that go around saying they are Dr. Rev. So-and-so Emeritus, and other such high-faluting nonsensical
nomenclature.
Second, it is also a continuing example of the disdain she has for the military. She called General Petraus a liar in 2007 when he testified regarding the Iraq surge plan (hmmm, kind of like that other Californian politician calling the CIA liars) In September 2007 she called for the immediate end to military operations in Iraq and the return of all forces. She was also against the 1991 Gulf War. She was very active in the anti-military / anti-Vietnam War movement in San Francisco and Marin County, which was her initial involvement in politics. Third, the U.S. Army guide to protocol says to address U.S. Senators as either Sir, Ma'am or Senator. So the general was in compliance with proper protocols and was in no way diminishing the diminutive, 4'11", Senator's stature. Fourth, as commonly used in the military, Sir or Ma'am is usually a higher form of respect than to call someone by their rank or title. Specifically using the rank designation in addressing people is usually reserved for Generals. Below that rank, Sir or Ma'am is usually indicative that the speaker actually respects the person, as oppossed to using the person's rank title as an indication that the ranking officer has not earned respect and his or her authority is only based on rank status. Fifth, if she wanted respect she wouldn't ask to be called Senator.
