NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City police say an officer has shot a man who confronted
officers with a loaded handgun, and the man is in critical condition.
The man's identity was not immediately released. He was taken to Lincoln Hospital after the shooting shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday in the South Bronx. Police say officers were chasing the 47-year-old man when they spotted his loaded .380-caliber handgun. Police say the man ran back toward the officers, and one of them shot him in the torso, left arm and right hand. Police say the man's handgun was recovered at the scene. It wasn't immediately clear why police initially began chasing him. One of the officers fired three shots, hitting the suspect in the chest, left arm and right hand, police said. Paramedics took him to Lincoln Hospital, where he was in critical condition. Police recovered the Lorcin .380 handgun and said it was loaded. The anti-crime cops - two police officers and a lieutenant - noticed the man walking on Home St. about 3:45 a.m. Saturday. "It look[ed] like he's shuffling around with his waistband," said a police source. When they approached him, he ducked behind two parked cars before fleeing toward Intervale Ave., police said. Two cops chased him while the lieutenant followed in the unmarked police car. The suspect, clutching the handgun, reversed course, circled toward the cop car, and then tried to change direction again - only to come face to face with the two officers, police said. The cops, who had their shields out, ordered the man to stop, sources said. When he didn't, the officer opened fire. The gunman, who did not shoot, ran a few feet before collapsing. Police said the officers, who were not injured, passed sobriety tests. |
