BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) -- Buffalo police say the off-duty officer who shot and killed one intruder and wounded another is a veteran cop who opened fire when they attacked him in his home.
Authorities say Charles Gidney Sr. was home alone Wednesday morning when two men broke into his house and failed to obey his order to "freeze" when he confronted them in his kitchen.
Officials say Gidney shot and killed Reno Sayles, who turned 36 Tuesday, and wounded 33-year-old Anthony Creamer.
Creamer is in critical condition but was expected to live.
A third man, Sayles' 22-year-old brother, is accused of driving the getaway car and was charged with burglary.
Police officials say Gidney joined the department in the 1980s. His son, Buffalo Police Officer Charles Gidney Jr., also lives at the home.
