Joseph Guzman has finally done the right thing. No, I'm not backing off my assertion that he is a crack dealing, gun toting, lying, low-life street thug. I'll stand behind that forever. No, I'm talking about his performance in Queens County Supreme Court on Monday April 1, 2008. Guzman has had several months, if not a whole year to prepare for this moment. ADA Testagrossa and his own attorneys had to have told this mutt countless times not to lose his cool. He had months to prepare for being called a low-life drug dealer, a robbery perp, and just a plain loser. With all of that preparation and not drunk (this is important because alcohol makes you less inhibited, and likely to do and say things you'd normally hold back, like the night of the shooting), but this guy cannot hold it back. Excellent, now Judge Cooperman gets to see the swagger, the anger, the inability to inhibit hair trigger rage despite being warned and prepped over and over again. Now picture this thug Guzman high and drunk with his cohorts Bell and Benefield. They get into words with Fabio Coicou who in turn threatens to get a gun. Guzman is sitting in open court right now and can't control his anger towards towards Det. Isnora and his attorney Anthony Ricco. So what do you think happens when Coicou threatens them? The openly thuggish Guzman goes into full street thug mode and the results are his friend is dead and he and another are wounded. Good job Fat Joe!
Now Denis Hamill is backpedalling like there's no tomorrow! And he still can't get it right. If you have been reading his columns, you will see his support for these low-lifes is starting to erode. In todays column he tells about how horrible it must have been to have been in the car when the three were shot. Please give me a break, if it were not cops that shot them neither man would be cooperating. Hey Denis, why don't you find the people Guzman was convicted of robbing? I want to know how horrible it was for them. They are the people I feel sorry for. What about the people that lived in fear where he was selling crack (near a school)? Can you please find out for me how horrible it was for them? The column starts off trying to minimize the important fact this guy is dangerous ex-con. Then Hamill at the end of his column slips in the contradictions in Guzmans testimony. I guess lying under oath is no big deal, eh Denis?
The worst part of his column is the fantasy that Guzman played into attorney Anthony Ricco's hands. There is no doubt Ricco is a talented lawyer but here is where you are wrong again. You deflect Guzmans behavior by trying to imply his hostility only comes from Ricco, as if it would not be there normally. Stop being an apologist and just tell the truth. Guzman exploded on the stand because he is a violent ex-con and career criminal, plain and simple. The predator has become the prey and now we all have to feel sorry. The political correctness police won't allow for reality in this case.
