So the apartment downstairs from us was broken into this week and this morning, a woman was fatally stabbed across the street. I have been wanting to move but I am completely freaked out now and need to get out of here. I want to move August 1st, so was hoping to give my landlord about 2 months notice as our lease doesn't end til December.
Does anyone have any tips on ethically and legally breaking a lease? I need to review my lease when I get home, but it looks like it was copied out of a book from 1973 and I can't recall any stipulations regarding lease termination.
Does anyone have advice on avoiding penalties?

I wonder how this soon to be former resident of Bushwick, and maybe NYC altogether, feels about a top-notch NYC detective getting suspended for parking on a hydrant? I wonder how many more soon to be former residents even realize that the crappy treatment of NY's Finest by their BS'ing mayor is helping to create an environment that they themselves will be fleeing within a couple of yrs or so?
You NYC residents in not-yet-fully-gentrified areas should start paying real close attention to how crime stats are fudged and to how poorly-treated and poorly-staffed the NYPD is.
I predict many more posts like the above in yrs to come.

GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS AT HOME AND
ABROAD
You forgot to mention the drive by shooting that occurred on Grand Ave and Putnam Ave this past Wednesday night.

Amazing that a precinct is so close by and they fire shots like that.
