Back around 1991 the Courts had a "diversity", "tolerance" program. The one for Queens was held in a monastery/retreat house in Jamaica (I am sure some of you guys know the location, it is up the hill around 164th St I think, just north of Hillside).
Anyway, not being Christian, I found it offensive and distracting to spend the day sitting under stained glass windows of JC on the cross, as well as all the other religious symbols that adorned the place. We were served tuna fish sandwiches for lunch by the nuns. To be clear, the program itself was not religious, that was just the venue it was held in.

Now don't get me wrong, the place was beautiful. I just felt very uncomfortable being surrounded by symbols of a religion I don't subscribe to, and did not feel that an agency of THE GOVERNMENT should have mandated my presence. But, I didn't make a big deal out of it, I just did it.

However, another Court employee, who happened to be an observant Jew, did object. So they sent him to the program in Manhattan, which was not held in a religious facility. Of course, they served HAM SANDWICHES for lunch.

You can not make it up. Probably today there would be some good lawsuits there.
