UPDATE
NYPD Ramblings#119, March 2006: Police Officer ERIC HERNANDEZ (24), 52nd Precinct, Shield Number 1872, off-duty on January 28th and at a White Castle restaurant on Webster Avenue, in The Bronx, severely beaten by a group of males inside the restaurant after announcing he was a Police Officer. He managed to apprehend a male at gun point in the parking lot, apparently believing he was one of the males who had assaulted him inside the restaurant. At this moment uniformed Officers from the 46th Precinct arrived and not realizing Officer Hernandez was a Police Officer, fired shots at "the man with the gun", fatally wounding the off-duty Officer in this "friendly-fire incident". Arrests of the six males who initially assaulted the Officer have been affected. The Officer expired at St. Barnabas Hospital on February 8th.
NEW: Five of the six males charged with beating Officer Hernandez have entered guilty pleas and are expected to be sentenced to jail terms of up to 10 years upon sentencing (for the ringleader) and lesser terms for the other four males. (Pg 2 of 3 Pgs)
