My recollection of the exact moment when I decided to try to leave the Patrol Services Bureau is indelibly etched on my brain.

It was late on the 4th of July and I was at a crime scene gathering information for yet another 49 for an act of violence that was NOT UNusual at all.

I was standing over a bike that had belonged to some skell who had been stabbed on Sterling Place and might not survive through the remainder of the evening. I was amused because my Mom had grown up on Sterling Place and I had planned on regaling her the following day with my exploits on her former block. smiley: frown

I was within spitting distance of my 20th anniversary and I basically had a moment of clarity, arriving at the realization that I no longer wanted to spend my 4th of Julys dealing with, sorting out and trying to make heads or tails out of this kind of inner-city, interpersonal bull s h i t. smiley: sick

I was a bozz in a high crime Pct. I had great cops working for me. They were my friends, thought I havent seen any of them in many years. I was wrestling with racial bullshyte in the Pct., I was running around trying to make numbers on these cops backs...and I said..enough. I had young kids, done the Harlem shuffle for long enough. Who was I?

Had so much shyte going on in my life at that time, I can say now, I wasnt the best bozz I could be, I was so ovewhelmed.

Never knew it then, but I know it now.

27 years of patrol and as a Lt, I was offered a silver bullet..Name it and it was mine...

ESU...granted!

Found myself in the SOD office within days, only to learn they were moving to Floyd Bennett field...and I might have to wait for a slot to open..

Living in Westchester at the time and highly allergic to commuting, I made a quick call to the ultimate hook, knowing my silver bullet was still good and landed in DCU. Located in the old 44 and working directly for the chief of the department.....2 great Sgts, couple of good cops and a roaring azzhole Lt who was on the verge of making captain and did so why I was there....Participated in some interesting stuff, but discovered and experienced first hand that there is a big segment of the department that was totally detached from the realities of basic policing...

6 months of this alien environment was enough, called my gifting hook and asked to leave this land of 917 (original exclusive 1 PP area code for dept cell phones) and put me back in the 47 and the land of 911.

...done!

No college, nearing the edge of the 2 year demotion cliff, COMPSTAT in it's infancy, I was driving to the 47 for a 4x12, just passing Bronxville on the BXRPKY and about to hit warp speed....when a voice in my head said....."it's time"!

When I arrived at the SH and entered the desk area, the PPAA was waiting with a stack communications, the Sgt on the desk tells me the CO wants to see me now...As I pass the ICOs office, he spots me and gives pursuit, babbling about OT slips I signed....CO wants me to switch tours to cover the day tour police department... starting tomorrow...short of supervisors.

Next day I was on the phone to the pension section, that voice in my head saying over and over ..."it's time!"

With 28 years, I beat the demotion cliff by 1 day and did my last tour (a 4x12) in the middle of a blizzard!

To protect my OT, I wavered my terminal leave, LT and threw away my entire 1996 vacation...

Only thing I miss.....the Pct dumpster!

One of my first tours as a Rookie in Williamburg's 90 Pct. in 1985 I was driving a great Lt. named Bobby Martin. He was doing an OT tour as The Patrol Supervisor at the time he had about 15 years on . Sitting in an RMP in front of the Bushwick Houses at the end of a midnight tour having coffee he tells me you know it's time to leave patrol when you see someone coming out of the projects and saying "Maybe I should go over and say hello and ask her out on a date". LOL.

25 years assigned to patrol commands and never regreted it. Always figured I had nothing to lose if they never gave me anything. Guys in details looked way to stressed worrying about what they had to do to keep them, especially the last 10 years or so.
Got no regrets.

I was a patrol sergeant in a transit district and their was an overtime tour for bag checks from 12:00 to 20:30. Since we were short on supervisors,sergeants and lieutenants, the operations coordinator told me to do the four hours on the front, then relieve the day tour desk officer who would do the second half of the overtime tour. Of course right after I left the subway station to relieve the desk officer a D.I. was looking for who had the bag checks at the subway station. The D.I. showed up at the district just after the start of the 4 X 12 and I was on the desk. So I explained to the D.I. that I had to leave the subway station so the day tour desk officer could take over the bag checks. The D.I. didn't want to hear why he just issued me a C.D. for being off post. So I received a CD because I could not be in two places at the same time.

Dino I completely agree. Details are a pressure cooker of you never know what they are gonna ask for next. Patrol is a detail, no stress but the radio. Wanna give me a cd great I'll take it what are you gonna bust me down to patrol? LOL

After 18 years of patrol , now you are asking whats next. I hope you have a phone call, because it might be to late to leave patrol. Not many units are going to pick up a cop with so close to 20.

Remember we each have different priorities, but ask yourself:
Are you making any overtime?
Will it pay to stay till 25, with no overtime.
If your making overtime, 20-25 is a huge difference in your pension.
How are your numbers? No OT, low numbers.
Do you have a skill? What type of job can you get ?
Are you going to work after retirement?

I went from a patrol cop with seven years to narcotics as an undercover. I bought drugs in the heights and got my detective shield. I started to get burned out in narco and had a chance to go to the Bureau. I jumped ship and haven't looked back.
The Detective Bureau was the best move I ever made. Plenty of OT, the occassional uniform detail, dignitary,
no sweat. My numbers get better every year.

I have many partners who have retired and have landed investigative gigs.
