Posts: 6130 Jan 12 13 9:02 PM	.380's tend to be unreliable and the round is not a good stopper. I like .40 S&W there are many guns in that caliber the same size as 9mm .38 is a good stopper with SWC HP ammo You do not need a parachute to skydive. You only need a parachute to skydive twice.

Posts: 3318 Jan 12 13 9:33 PM	I carry my 38 5 shot that I bought from another MOS getting ready to leave the job when I came on. Still fires perfect, always reliable and can be used for a jack as well..The gun has to be easily 50 yrs old..

It depends on what you want a gun for and personal preference. The small .380s feel like you don't even have a gun in your pocket. The smaller nines other than the Rohrbaugh 9mm which is pricey and difficult to find, are a bit heavier and bulkier if you are looking for a pocket gun. Of the .380s I'd recommend a S&W Bodyguard with integral laser since they can be found as cheap as $365 or Ruger LCP. The Kahr PM9 is a bit bigger, very accurate, easier to shoot than the little .380s, although it is bit heavier to wear in a front pocket. A Detective Special with bobbed hammer is a little or a lot harder to find these days, but can certainly serve more than one purpose like Squarebag's Chief. The Glock 27 is a little harder to carry in a front pocket, although it is a sweet gun. I carry a .380 usually. Will you (can you) comfortably carry your sidearm in a sturdy, strong side outside the pants holster or will you pocket carry. It has been my experience that pocket carry limits you to a handgun weighing not much over 15 ounces loaded. Holster carry and you're good to go for a service weight/size handgun. So, it's a matter of lifestyle and the social setting you're in which will determine which size/caliber handgun is most practical for you to carry. Best of luck.

Posts: 4033 Jan 13 13 12:25 AM	5andOUT, do you have a Kahr? The only Kahr I heard of with problems was the one designed to NYPD specs, ruining the inherent good qualities of the gun. I have never had a failure to feed with any Glock, other than some crappy aftermarket metal magazine, and the magazine was the culprit. I never had a failure to fire with the Kahr either. I did have several failures with a Taurus TCP, and again it was a faulty magazine, not the Taurus.The Kahr has a match barrel. Of course this is a little heavy for a guy with a bad back to carry regularly. You'll also blow your pension check if you target shoot with it once a month. Has anyone fired the Beretta Nano? Posts: 230 Jan 13 13 3:00 AM	When I retired 2003 I was close friends with a couple of the guys who did the Specialized Training at the Range. They told me never go with a .380. I told them that the Baby Glock was too heavy being I was the recipiant of 5 back surgeries and needed something smaller and lighter without giving up reliability. They recommended two the Seacam .32 or the NAA .32. At the time I retired in 2003 the Seacamp was not available so i went with the NAA. It is great for everyday carry. When I do go into the City with the family I tend to go with Baby Glock. I am seriously considering the Rohrbaugh 9. Does anyone have any experience with it? I would appreciate input. Also beware of the Kahr PM 9. I had bought one and had to have it exchanged 3 times for not working brand new + 3 new guns. Finally I demanded my money back and this was about the time the job was having problems with the Kahr. If I did not have friends at the Range, Legal Bureau and License Division I would still have to be doing paperwork. All three guns after being sent back to Kahr had to be destroyed for malfunctioning.

Posts: 213 Jan 13 13 9:32 AM	The best gun is the one you will carry. That’s why 380's are so popular. They are meant for up close point and shoot not target practice. Of these the Ruger LCP without the laser is the most concealable. 9's and 40's have better stopping power but they are left home frequently where they will do you no good when you need your gun!

I've been trying to get an answer to this question. Maybe you have it. About 10 or 11 years ago I walked in to a gun store on Long Island and bought a Kahr K9, drove to work, filled out the paperwork, got a log entry, and had it put on my 10 card. I don't shoot it a lot, but have never had a problem with it when I do.For years I've heard from guys, and read in places like this what a POS this gun is because the NYPD spec'd gun is terrible. Yet others have said the non NYPD gun is fine. My gun wasn't bought at the equipment section, no NYPD gunsmith has ever had their hands on it, and as far as I know it is the same gun anyone else could have walked in that store and bought if they were legally allowed to do so that day. The store didn't see my shield and ID and pull mine from a seperate NYPD pile. Is my gun still lumped in with the batch that gets trashed because of the era it was made in? Or is mine OK?
