Two robbery suspects were injured, one fatally, and a trooper was severely wounded during a shooting that followed a chase and crash, state police said.
The shooting happened on Route 153 in Essex Monday afternoon as troopers were apprehending the robbery suspects, they said.
The chase followed a robbery in Old Saybrook, a police source said.
The trooper was shot and reportedly was alert and conscious when he was being brought to a medical clinic in a patrol car shortly before 3 p.m. By 4 p.m., Life Star helicopter had landed at the clinic and was lifting off, headed to Hartford Hospital.
The shooting happened after Old Saybrook police chased a vehicle that was believed to have been involved in an armed robbery in their town. The fleeing vehicle and a state trooper's patrol car crashed on Route 153 in Essex, state police said.
The trooper had what state police called severe injuries.
The road remained closed while troopers investigate.
